BULA, Camarines Sur - The Liga ng mga Barangay of Bula and the Bicol Medical Center, National Voluntary Blood Services Program has collected 520 units of blood for a week-long activity last November 10 - 15, 2008.

Various activities were conducted to  promote and encourage voluntary blood  donation, such as, “Alay-Lakad”, a three-kilometre long walk that were   participated in by LGU personnel,   barangay officials, students, Bula Riders, voluntary blood donors, and other private institutions.
Blood Olympics dubbed as “Dugo ng Barangay” had been conducted and joined by 33 barangays of the Municipal of Bula. Voluntary blood donors representing their respective clustered barangays unselfishly donated to show their commitment to the NVBSP.  Hon. Rosario V. Nabor of Bgy. Pawili received the 1st prize having the most number of VBD, Hon. Jesus Saluna of Bgy. San Jose awarded 2nd prize, and Hon. Gil Volante of Bgy. Taisan won 3rd prize. One of the highlights of blood donor festival was the “Bring Big Brother” (BBB). It was a modified version in which the Day Care pupils were encouraged to recruit and bring voluntary blood donors from among their family members during the said activity.

This signifies that donor recruitment could also be done effectively by kids and that a blood program does not have an age limit or educational requirement. Bgy. San Ramon Day Care Center received as the 1st prize winner, Bgy. Lanipga as 2nd prize, and Bgy. San Agustin Centro as 3rd prize winner having the highest number of recruited qualified BIG BROTHER as their Voluntary Blood Donor. Moreover, day care pupils attended joyfully to the advocacy campaign and lecture on blood program by the BMC-NVBSP team, likewise to the campaign on Children’s rights which was facilitated in by the “Bantay Bata 163” of ABS CBN.

With the main purpose of instilling public consciousness of this program, especially to the young, a PowerPoint presentation on Voluntary Blood Donation were discussed by Ms. Mina Sacdal and Mr. Chester Velasco focusing on blood matters and donation process followed by a quiz bee.

Other activities that added spice to the festival were Slogan Making, Poster Making and Poem making contests.

Likewise, a colourful majorette and band exhibition were performed by the secondary students from different schools to proudly impart their talents and skills in the history of promoting Voluntary Blood Donation among Bulaeños and to the entire region as well.

“DUGONG ORAGON” Blood Donor Festival truly marks another significant contribution in the history of blood program in Camarines Sur. It boosts awareness to the constituents from different barangays especially the youth, and motivates other individuals and institutions to have their own blood pool at BMC Blood Bank for future use.
